BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Boise police say a 36-year-old man struggled with an officer and then killed himself during a traffic stop Saturday.

The Idaho Statesman reports that an officer pulled the man over about 4 a.m. and determined he had a warrant for failing to appear in court after a recent arrest for driving under the influence. When a second officer arrived on scene, the man stepped out of his sport utility vehicle and said he had a gun.

An officer struggled with the man but couldn't stop him from pulling out the weapon. Police say the officer stepped back, and the man shot himself in the chest.
