Foes of a plan by an oil company to haul more than 200 oversized loads of refining equipment along a two-lane north Idaho highway are asking the state to reconsider a decision to permit the shipments. Earlier this month, the Idaho Transportation Department issued a permit allowing a unit of ExxonMobil to do a test run along U.S. Highway 12, a protected and scenic river corridor. Director Brian Ness also said permits for the company to haul more as many as 200 other loads should be granted. Opponents of the shipments filed a petition Wednesday asking Ness to back off that decision. They say new evidence suggests the company can scale down the size of those loads and use other routes to get the equipment from Lewiston to the oil sands in Alberta.
