BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Officials say a mountain lion attacked two dogs running with a mountain biker in the Boise foothills. Authorities say the attack occurred about 2 p.m. Monday and efforts to track and kill the lion failed.

Both dogs are expected to survive. The mountain biker says he heard one of his dogs yelp behind him and turned to see it being attacked by the mountain lion. The man threw rocks but the mountain lion didn't back down until struck in the head. Officials tried to track the mountain lion but dogs lost the scent after about half a mile.

Officials say they intended to kill the lion because of its aggressive behavior and because the mountain biker describes it as emaciated. Officials say that suggests it's unable to hunt effectively.
