NAMPA, Idaho (AP) — The Nampa Education Association has filed a lawsuit against the Nampa School District contending teachers were pressured to agree to take unpaid furlough days. The lawsuit filed Monday in 3rd District Court argues the district pressured teachers to sign an addendum to their contracts agreeing to four unpaid days between January and May of this year.

The association says the addendums are illegal because they weren't written contracts approved by the state superintendent of public instruction. The district's attorney, Bud Yost, says the district isn't required to discuss voluntary furlough days with the union. Yost also says the Idaho State Department of Education doesn't have to approve amendments to contracts.

School district officials announced in August that budgeting errors spanning the previous two years resulted in a $2.8 million shortfall.
