Nampa Teachers Won’t See Pay Cut

NAMPA, Idaho (AP) — The Nampa School District teacher contract calls for 14 furlough days during the 2013-14 school year to help with a budget deficit, but the lowest paid teachers won't see a cut in pay.

School officials estimate 45 percent of the teachers will be making the district minimum salary of $31,750, which is $750 higher than the state minimum for certified teachers. District spokeswoman Allison Westfall tells the Idaho Press-Tribune that district attorneys advised the district to maintain the minimum salaries.

However, those teachers won't be required to work on their furlough days because the district can't issue two different contracts. Currently, 27 percent of district teachers make the minimum salary. Officials expect that number will be as high as 45 percent once the district fills 119 vacant teaching positions.
