DUBOIS, Idaho (AP) — An attempt to find a missing human head in a mysterious cold-case killing has come up empty in eastern Idaho.

The Idaho State Journal in Pocatello reports that the search of the Civil Defense Caves last week failed to find human remains. But Idaho State University researchers who took part succeeded in completing a scan of the caves that will produce a three-dimensional map. Authorities say the case started in 1979 with the discovery of a male torso.

In 1991, the arms and legs were found in another part of the caves, near the town of Rexburg in eastern Idaho. The caves actually are rocky underground tubes formed long ago by lava and extend several thousand feet. During the Cold War, they were considered potential bomb shelters.
