SANDPOINT, Idaho (AP) — A Bonner County sheriff's deputy in northern Idaho has been critically injured after being struck by a tractor-trailer while attempting to make a U-turn on U.S. Highway 95.

Idaho State Police say 29-year-old Alexander Hughes' 2011 Chevy Tahoe was struck at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Hughes was transported to Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene. A hospital spokeswoman Wednesday morning said Hughes was listed in critical condition.

Authorities say Hughes' vehicle was struck by a 2013 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Adil Naib of Calgary, Alberta. Police say Naib wasn't injured. Police say both vehicles were southbound when Hughes attempted the U-turn.
