COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — A northern Idaho man who kidnapped, beat and raped a 13-year-old girl has been sentenced to life in prison.

Thirty-two-year-old Michael David Nixon of Coeur d'Alene received the sentence in 1st District Court and must serve 20 years before becoming eligible for parole. Nixon was convicted of kidnapping and rape following the July 2013 assault that ended after the girl escaped and Nixon surrendered after a nine-hour standoff with police.

The Spokesman Review reports in a story on Monday that the fixed 20-year sentences each for kidnapping and rape will be served concurrently. Nixon's older sister testified at the sentencing hearing that she and her three younger siblings had a traumatic childhood that included homelessness as well as physical, emotional and sexual abuse.
