The state Board of Education has appointed a task force to decide how trustees will proceed with online course requirements for high school students. Board president Richard Westerberg appointed trustee Don Soltman on Thursday to lead the effort. Public schools chief Tom Luna championed legislation that cleared the 2011 session and directs the board to draft a rule on online course requirements. Luna, who sits on the board, wanted to require high school students to take four online course credits to graduate - but that provision was dumped amid lawmaker concerns. The board is now working on a rule, which will require approval from state lawmakers. Luna told board members they need to work quickly if they're going to have a rule drafted in time for the 2012 session.
