TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX) — After months of work to improve the site, the park at the Twin Falls Power Plant is once again open. The park and boat ramp have been closed since September while Idaho Power made improvements to the dam and boat launch area. They reopened on Saturday.

“We appreciate the public’s patience during this extended closure,” Project Manager Paul Walz said in a prepared statement. “This was an important project that will benefit the safety of our employees and reduce long-term maintenance costs.”

Idaho Power built the original Twin Falls Power Plant in 1935 and updated it in 1995 with a new powerhouse. The project has a generating capacity of 52.9 megawatts, according to a news release by the company — enough energy to power roughly 36,800 homes.

Twin Falls Park, located northeast of the city in the Snake River Canyon, is a 10-acre day-use area with trees and lawns, picnic tables, a boat ramp and a viewpoint with interpretive panels.

As part of the recent project a new boat ramp and boat dock abutment were installed, according to the news release. Idaho Power also replaced aging wooden flashboards on the dam with a concrete extension to accommodate high water levels.

The company says this will eliminate the need for maintenance on the flashboards, limiting future park closures and reducing the risk to Idaho Power employees. Other safety measures also were included in the project.
