BOISE, Idaho (AP) — State officials have reopened a popular launch site for hang gliders near Boise after a three-year closure. The Idaho Statesman reports that a special-use permit issued by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game allowed hang gliders on Wednesday to return to the top of Hammer Flat.

The agency acquired the 705-acre parcel of wildlife habitat from the city of Boise for $4.23 million in July to add it to the Boise River Wildlife Management Area. The agency kept the area closed while creating a management plan and opted to open it to hang gliding from May through Nov. 15.

The agency says the area isn't as critical to hoofed wildlife during those months. Hang glider Marshall Sinclair says it a beginner-friendly launch site with mostly grassy rolling hills.
