KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho (KTVB) — An off-duty Shoshone Co. deputy who tried to save a drowning man got more than he bargained for on Lake Coeur d'Alene.

The Sunday rescue ended with the man punching Deputy Jacob Allen in the face according to the report filed with the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office. Deputies wrote that the rescued man was intoxicated and on the dock when they arrived on scene.

Allen told authorities he dove off a dock near Harrison, Idaho to try and save the man. He said the man went under the water after bobbing up and down in the lake. Authorities said Allen pulled the man out of the water.

Allen said the man was coughing and choking when he got him to safety. The police report stated that's when the man became belligerent with Allen and punched him in the face.

The off-duty deputy decided to not press charges.

The man Allen saved was taken to the hospital. Authorities said he became combative during the ride to the hospital but nobody else was injured.

Witnesses told authorities that the man Allen saved was struggling to swim.

A woman said the man left One Shot Charlie's, ran to the beach and straight into the water. People who knew the man admitted that he had been drinking. They claimed the man had at least five-double of whiskey before heading into the lake.
