BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Fifty small dogs less than 20 pounds are available for adoption at the Idaho Humane Society.

The dogs arrived in Boise on Thursday from an overcrowded shelter in Sacramento, California, and include terriers, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus and Chihuahuas. Hannah Parpart of the Humane Society says there's a shortage of adoptable small dogs in southwest Idaho.

Officials say the dogs are going through health checks and some will be available for adoption starting Saturday. The rest will likely be available for adoption in the following week. The dogs will be at the Idaho Humane Society's main shelter and the Idaho Humane Society PetSmart Adoption Center.
