The USGS has just recorded an earthquake very near the border between Idaho and Utah.

If the initial reports are right, this was a small quake registering only a 2.8 on the Richter Scale.

This tiny quake is no worry, but this region of Southern Idaho and especially Northern Utah is ripe for a major quake. There was a study last spring reported by the Salt Lake Tribune claiming that a major shaker is inevitable.

According to a new forecast from the Working Group on Utah Earthquake Probabilities, there is a 43 percent probability that the Wasatch Front will experience a large earthquake — magnitude 6.75 or greater — in the next 50 years.

A 6.5 in Northern Utah would be strong enough to rearrange the plates on our shelves in Southern Idaho, which is one reason why we keep our eyes on even these small quakes.
