BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho lawmakers have introduced a bill that seeks to better define the roles of parents and schools in the education of students.

KIVI-TV reports that the legislation is similar to last year's parental rights bill, but includes more language detailing the involvement of teachers, administrators and parents.

The bill places the most responsibility for a student's education on the child's parent or guardian. It says the state plays a secondary and supportive role.

Under the legislation, school districts would be required to inform parents of their primary rights each year. Those rights include pulling students out a classroom if parents feel the child can be better served elsewhere.

Republican Sen. Mary Souza, of Coeur D'Alene, who sponsored the bill, added that the bill isn't an excuse for truancy.
