TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX) – The votes are in, unofficial results have been posted and, with a sigh of relief, Twin Falls County election officials were able to leave the counting machines before midnight.

Counting of the ballots was completed at the Election Office in the Twin Falls County West building a little before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, though County Clerk Kristina Glascock and a few others stayed later to wrap up details from the day’s event.

“Things went very smoothly,” she said.

No major hiccups during the counting process – or at the precincts during the day – and low voter turnout helped make it an early night.

Of 32,763 registered voters, according to the county’s election results, only 8,882 drew their ballots. Deputy Clerk Sharon Lancaster visited four precincts in Buhl earlier that day, among others, and said only around 300 ballots had been cast at those precincts by mid-afternoon.

Glascock said the low turnout wasn’t unexpected. The county always sees more voters at the polls when a U.S. president is on the ticket, so she’s expecting November’s general election to be busy. The GOP primary in March also was much busier at the polls than May’s election.

Also, many people may still be confused with the new rules on party affiliation, she said. For questions about affiliation, contact the election office at elections@co.twin-falls.id.us or 736-4004.
