BOISE, Idaho – You may be eligible to file your tax return online – and for free – through the Idaho Tax Commission.

The Tax Commission’s free e-file page links to companies that offer free electronic filing for selected groups of taxpayers. If taxpayers don’t use these links, they may be asked to pay for e-filing a state return when they e-file a federal return at no cost.
“Last year more than 500,000 Idaho taxpayers most likely qualified to e-file for free,” said Renee Eymann, public information officer for the Tax Commission. “But only about 12,000 of them took advantage of the free-file option. We want to make more people aware of this service to help them save money."

The companies listed on the website offer different levels of service, so taxpayers should look carefully at each provider to see which free filing offers they qualify for. Those who choose to e-file must use the same provider to file both their federal and state returns.

Taxpayers who want to file both their federal and state income tax returns online for free should visit the Idaho State Tax Commission and click on the Free individual income tax e-file link.
