Though DreamWorks Animation has had some hits ('Shrek 2,' believe it or not, is one of the top ten highest grossing films of all time), their last film at Paramount ,'Rise of the Guardians,' was such a flop that it caused the studio to reduce ranks. Fortunately that may have just been some bad luck as their most recent film 'The Croods' is so successful that the studio has just announced a sequel.

Writer/directors Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders are tapped to come back, and The Hollywood Reporter noted that the studio is in negotiations with the main voice cast, which includes Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone. The film is still playing theatrically, but it is currently at over $144 million domestically and $386 million worldwide. As the film is still playing, that means the film has a very good shot at making over half a billion dollars worldwide.

DreamWorks Animation has always been very sequel friendly (see: 'Shrek,' 'Madagascar,' 'Kung Fu Panda' and the upcoming 'How to Train Your Dragon' sequel), so this is no surprise. But a big failure like 'Rise' could have shaken the studio up a little. But with hindsight it seems quite likely that the failure of 'Rise of the Guardians' may have been due to it being DWA's last film with Paramount, before moving to Twentieth Century Fox. Sometimes people like to give a last kick as you walk out the door.
