‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ Adds Hugh Grant

Warner Bros.

The long-awaited (?) film adaptation of ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ is still trucking along, even though it has faced many obstacles during its journey to the big screen. The film cast Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer months ago, and now it has added a big-name supporting player: Hugh Grant.

Grant will play the head of the British Naval Intelligence in the film, which is being helmed by Guy Ritchie. (Steven Soderbergh had long been attached but dropped the project in 2011.) No further details are available regarding his character.

In ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’, which is based on the 1960s spy series of the same name, Cavil and Hammer play Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, respectively, who work for the mysterious United Network Command for Law Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.). The duo will attempt to stop an evil organization known as THRUSH from world domination.

In light of ‘The Lone Ranger‘s’ failure at the domestic box office, it remains to be seen if there’s interest in a revived TV show that, in all likelihood, today’s generation is not at all familiar with. That said, Ritchie was able to inject fresh energy into the ‘Sherlock Holmes’ reboot, so Warner Bros. clearly hopes he can do the same here.

Production on ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ begins in September.
