If you watch Focus Features' 'The Signal' trailer hoping to find out exactly what the movie is about, you're probably in for a bit of a surprise. Although this is clearly a science-fiction thriller full of all kinds of creepy and gory alien imagery, the trailer puts tone first and foremost. And you know what? We're sold on the tone.

Laurence Fishburne is the only big name in the cast -- though people will soon know Brenton Thwaites' name after everyone sees him in 'Oculus,' 'Maleficent,' 'The Giver' and 'Unbroken' -- but the trailer uses him well, putting him in a bulky containment suit and having him calmly interrogate our young hero (Thwaites), who has been exposed to "the signal," which is apparently a very bad thing. We get glimpses of big action, Cronenberg-ian body horror and beautifully shot moments that would look like something out of a Terrence Malick movie if they weren't so creepy.

The official synopsis deliberately sidesteps anything that would actually reveal what 'The Signal' is really about:

Three college students on a road trip across the Southwest experience a detour: the tracking of a computer genius who has already hacked into MIT and exposed security faults. The trio find themselves drawn to an eerily isolated area. Suddenly everything goes dark. When one of the students, Nic, regains consciousness, he is in a waking nightmare …

In addition to the 'Signal' trailer (above), Focus Features debuted a few images and the poster (shown below). 'The Signal' will arrive in theaters on June 13, 2014.
