‘The Walking Dead’ Season 4 Spoilers: Eugene’s Motives Revealed, Plus More on the Mysterious Home Invaders

The Walking Dead Spoilers Eugene Josh McDermitt Jeff Kober
AMC

Last night’s all-new ‘Walking Dead‘ installment, “Claimed,” brought us the shocking truth behind Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), Rosita (Christian Serratos) and Eugene’s (Josh McDermitt) mission to Washington, but how much stock can we really put in their claims? Series star McDermitt weighs in on Eugene’s shifty behavior, as rumblings suggest we may not have seen the last of Rick’s home invasion crew.

You’re warned of potential spoilers for the remainder of ‘The Walking Dead’ season 4 from here on out, but for those believing Eugene’s claims of being able to stop the zombie apocalypse seem too good to be true, you may be on to something. As fans of the comic books already know, the character of Dr. Eugene Porter is eventually exposed as a fraud, though it remains to be seen if AMC’s incarnation intends to follow the same path.

Series star Josh McDermitt spoke to The Hollywood Reporter of his character’s mysterious behavior over the course of “Claimed,” which seems to suggest the characterization isn’t altogether dissimilar from the events of the book:

Eugene is constantly scheming; and he is always a few moves ahead. It’s like he’s planning a chess match. He could have swung the gun the other way and killed the walkers but instead he swung it at the truck. Whether he did it on purpose — and I like to think he did — but even if he didn’t he’s able to use that and think, “How can I use this to my advantage? How can I continue to stall this trip to D.C.?”

As much as he doesn’t want to be in the room with a lot of people who might ask a bunch of questions, he likes to keep that group small and manipulate them. He likes to be the one who pulls the strings and he feels like he can help Glenn find Maggie. That is going to slow up Abraham and Eugene may try to and appeal to Abraham’s humanity in that.

Eugene wasn’t the only mystery from the hour, however, as a curious encounter saw Rick trapped in the home he, Michonne and Carl had holed up in, waking up to find another group of survivors ransacking the house for supplies. Rick managed to escape the house without confronting the group directly (among them recognizable character actor and ‘Sons of Anarchy‘ star Jeff Kober), though it certainly struck as odd that we never quite learned what they were up to, or why they were so quick to maim or injure one another. As for whether or not we’ll see them again, AMC tellingly refused to comment on the characters.

Well, what do you think? For an otherwise piece-moving installment, might “Claimed” have had more in the subtext for Eugene and the mysterious villains for future installments to play with? Check out a preview of next week’s “Still” below, and give us your predictions in the comments!
