Third Case of West Nile Virus found in Idaho

CANYON COUNTY, Idaho (KTVB) -- The first human case of West Nile Virus in Canyon County has been confirmed, according to officials with Southwest District Health. The patient is a woman in her 50's.

Health officials say she is recovering. The woman began exhibiting symptoms on July 10. She was not hospitalized. Three counties in Southwest Idaho have confirmed human cases of West Nile, including Washington, Payette and now Canyon County. Raemi Nolevanko, an epidemiologist with Southwest District Health says, ""It's a good reminder that it is out there and people need those precautions to protect themselves"

To stay protected, Nolevanko suggests people stay indoors when mosquitoes are most active, at dusk and dawn. You should also make sure to use repellent with Deet. In addition, wear long-sleeve shirts and pants.

Also, dump out any standing water near your property. Mosquitoes infected with the virus have been detected in nine Idaho counties: Adams, Washington, Valley, Gem, Payette, Canyon, Ada, Owyhee, and Bingham.
