TWISP, Wash. (AP) — Officials say three Washington firefighters died after their vehicle crashed during a wildfire and flames likely overtook them.

The three were killed Wednesday and four others were injured, at least one critically, as raging wildfires advanced on towns in north-central Washington. National Forest officials said late Wednesday that Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers reported that the three firefighters were battling a blaze when they were involved in a vehicle accident.

The sheriff says that "it is believed that the fire overtook the vehicle." It wasn't immediately clear if the four injured were also involved in the accident. That forest service statement identified the four injured as two Department of Natural Resources employees, a DNR contractor, and one U.S. Forest Service worker. No names have been released.
