Tim Tebow Gets Released, Jets Finally Realize He’s Not Good

The New York Jets have released Tim Tebow in the most high-profile split since Brad and Jen called it quits.

The Jets parted ways with the lightning rod for controversy on Monday after a year in which he rode the bench following a trade with the Denver Broncos that left many people scratching their heads.

In a press release put out by the team, Jets coach Rex Ryan broke the news:

“We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow. Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped.  Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward.”

The Jets failed to trade Tebow since the end of the season, forcing them to waive him and cause a severe blow to the popularity of the Tebowing Fan Club of America — Empire State Chapter.

Tebow’s future with the team became cloudier than the floor at a Grateful Dead concert in 1960s San Francisco after they drafted Geno Smith last week, giving them six quarterbacks on the roster.

After the Jets gave up a fourth round draft pick for the former Heisman winner, the team boasted how it had several tricks up their sleeve when it came to using him. Well, it seems they were wearing a tank top with no place to hide those tricks because Tebow hardly played, even while starting quarterback Mark Sanchez — and the Jets — endured a brutal season.

Tebow’s final line for the 2012 season is not impressive, even by backup QB standards: he completed six of eight passes and ran 32 times for 102 yards and no scores.

Where Tebow lands now is a great mystery. The Jaguars could be interested, as may be the Chargers, whose head coach, Mike McCoy, served as the Broncos offensive coordinator when Tebow led them to the playoffs in 2011.

And don’t count out the Patriots, who’ve done wonders with former Jets. Plus, wouldn’t it be just like Bill Belichick to stick it to the Jets by turning Tebow into a star?
