US Flag in Northern Idaho Forest Returns for Third Year
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — A U.S. flag has once again returned to the top of a large ponderosa pine tree on Fourth of July Pass in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest.
The Coeur d'Alene Press reports (http://bit.ly/1pkRSul) that a national forest spokeswoman says they are not trying to find the person responsible for attaching the flag to the pine, but that it's not authorized.
This is the third year the flag has been placed in the same tree. The Forest Service each year has decided not to remove the flag due to safety concerns for tree climbers. Spokeswoman Shoshana Cooper says this year the top of the tree was cut, meaning the tree will die sooner.
The flag can be seen from Interstate 90 around mile marker 27.
