Utah Considering Citizenship Test to Graduate High School

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A proposal requiring Utah high school students to pass the U.S. citizenship test in order to graduate received has cleared its first hurdle at the state Legislature. Six members of the Legislature's Senate Education Committee unanimously approved the measure Tuesday afternoon. It must still be approved by the full Senate and the Utah House.

Utah is one of 15 states expected to consider the measure this year. An Arizona-based nonprofit promoting teaching about public service and patriotism is working to get all 50 states to approve similar laws.

Two weeks ago, Arizona became the first state to require students to pass the citizenship test. The U.S. citizenship test is a 100-question exam that tests knowledge of subjects like the U.S. presidents and the Bill of Rights.
