VIDEO: Idaho Teen Hits Police Car after Looking at Text Message

MERIDIAN, Idaho (KTVB)- The 18-year-old driver that crashed his vehicle into a deputy’s patrol car will be cited for inattentive driving.

Holden Falk of Emmett admitted to the Idaho State Police that he was reading a text message that he had just received.

Falk originally told police he was falling asleep behind the wheel just before the crash happened.

He was driving eastbound on State Street when he drifted into oncoming traffic just before 9 p.m. Falk then collided with the Ada County Sheriff’s Office patrol car head-on that was being driven by Deputy Mike Fratusco.

Both Falk and Deputy Fratusco were injured in the wreck and┬átaken to Saint Alphonsus in Eagle by ambulance. Trooper Kenny Walker said Fratusco suffered minor injuries, and was treated and released. Falk’s injuries appeared more serious, he said.

Fratusco, who did not have his emergency lights or siren on, attempted to get out of the way but could not avoid the collision. Police say Falk was not wearing a seatbelt, but have not released whether the deputy was buckled in. Both vehicles were totaled in the wreck.

State Street was blocked at Seneca Springs Way for about two hours, and had been reopened.

Walker said that although ISP will investigate the wreck like any other crash, seeing a fellow law enforcement officer in this situation served as a reminder of how quickly accidents can occur.

“When things like this happen, it reminds us that we just have to be very aware behind the wheel – everybody, not just us,” he said. “At any point, something that could happen through no fault of your own, and you’re really in no control of that.”
