Washington Climber Killed in Sawtooth Mountains

STANLEY, Idaho (AP) — A 28-year-old Washington state woman has died after a fall while climbing in the Sawtooth Mountains in central Idaho.

KTVB-TV reports that Anna Katherine Dvorak of Spokane died on Tuesday after falling on a popular rock feature called the Elephant's Perch. The Custer County Sheriff's Office says Dvorak was on the 1,000-foot ascent when she lost her hold at about 1:30 p.m. Authorities say safety lines stopped her fall but she suffered a severe head injury.

Sheriff Stuart Lumpkin says the remote terrain made it difficult for rescuers to reach Dvorak and she stopped breathing at about 5:15 p.m., and died a short time later. A rescue team stayed on a ledge overnight with the body and brought it down on Wednesday.
