BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A southwest Idaho woman blamed in the death of her 2-year-old daughter has been charged with first-degree murder in the case. Veronica Herrera is scheduled to go on trial in January for the death of her daughter Nakita earlier this year. The 29-year-old mother was accused of burning her daughter's body in a barrel at her residence in Homedale in August. Prosecutors initially charged with her four counts of felony injury to a child and one count of felony destruction of evidence. The Idaho Statesman reports prosecutors replaced the evidence destruction charge Monday with first-degree murder. Herrera told investigators her daughter was fatally injured after hitting her head during potty training. She told police she panicked and feared losing custody of her other children if she explained what happened.
