I have tattoos. I wouldn't say I have a tattoo addiction and intend to cover my body in ink, but I do have some, mostly well-thought-out tattoos that mean a lot for different reasons. I have portraits of my kids, logos of my favorite sports teams, and tattoos of things related to my profession.

Choose Your First Tattoo Wisely

My first tattoo, I got when I was 18, at a place called the Picture Machine on Geary Blvd. in San Francisco, when I was in town for the Monsters of Rock concert at Candlestick Park is on the back of my left shoulder.

It was originally a small red rose. Yep, a small red rose, the size of a nickel. Why? Because I was young, stupid, scared, and couldn't think of anything else I could afford. That tattoo stayed hidden for at least 8 years before being covered with a large bull skull. Much cooler than the rose. But, if you look closely, you can still see it. (Circled in red)

Tattoos Make My Wife Happy, And That Makes Me Happy

My wife loves tattoos as well, and in fact, has more than me, and if she had her way, she would get one every week. Happy life, happy wife, with tattoos.

Deciding to put permanent art on your body is a very personal choice. One that isn't for everyone for many reasons. It can come with a stigma, stares, and even discrimination. But, I think now more than ever, tattoos are becoming more acceptable in today's society.

Tattoos For A Cause

I saw an elderly woman at the grocery store the other day with a big pink tattoo on her wrist. I commented on how awesome it was and asked her what it represented and she told me it was her present to herself for beating breast cancer and that was the date she found out she was cancer-free.

After I gave her a high five and congratulated her on beating cancer, I walked away swallowing the lump in my throat and trying to decide on what my next tattoo would be while admiring the ones I currently have and smiling back at those faces on my forearm.
