It is no secret that 2022 has not been the kindest year for many. Gas reached an all-time high, COVID has been up and down, the weather has been really cold and really hot, and many businesses have seen their doors close or have had to let many employees go. Everyone is feeling the effects of 2022 and the chaos that has come from it, and as the holidays approach, some of that chaos has trickled down and will affect how families approach holiday shopping and traveling this year. A recent survey has shown how Americans are preparing for the holidays this year, and the numbers are a little surprising.

Due to all that has taken place this year, according to a survey on WalletHub, half of the people in America believe that Santa will be less generous this year due to finances. The most astounding number, according to the survey, is that 40% of Americans said that they will forgo gifts altogether this holiday season. Strategically to spread the money out, 47% of people said they would begin shopping earlier this year, which if they haven't started yet, that plan didn't work. As online shopping has increased over the years, this year will see even more of a jump as 56% of people said they would do more online shopping this year than in years past.

Paying for gifts this time of year can be tough, and with some of the financial hardships that many have seen, 18% of Americans surveyed said they would apply for a new credit card to help pay for gifts, with almost half of the people saying they won't have their gifts paid off by the due date. To give an example of how hard the last couple of years has been, 25% of Americans claimed they still haven't paid off gifts from last Christmas. With many things going up in price, it makes buying gifts a tad more expensive than in the past, which is why 28% of people said they will spend less this year than they did last year, and 25% of people said they would be less charitable this year than in the past. When the survey asked what people wanted most for Christmas, 52% said peace and quiet, 40% said faster delivery, 28% said friendly customer service, and 25% said gift wrapping.

Some of these may be you and some of them you may disagree with, but one thing we can all agree on is that Christmas gifts have gotten pricier than ever before and we are all feeling it. Giving less to charity, buying fewer gifts, or not buying gifts at all are all ways to adjust to the rough times we have all endured this year. Hopefully, everyone can get what they want for Christmas this year, and have a happy holiday season.
