Every state in the United States offers something a little bit different and makes it unique. Some states have huge mountain ranges, some are filled with miles and miles of farmland, and others have incredible coastlines. Some places are more crowded than others, while others are more secluded. Some states have sunshine all year, while others experience seasons, and others are bitterly cold for most of the year. Despite your preference, there are certain states that many think of as the best. California is one of the states that many usually think of as one of the best in the country, and while it has a strong argument, that might not be the case according to some experts.

While California has plenty to offer and is one of the most diverse states in the country, you might be surprised to find out that according to a recent list, California is not among the best states in the country. It does not even crack the top ten for that matter. A recent list released on penandpatron.com ranked the states from worst to best, based on Americans no longer wanting to live there. According to the list, California did rank in the top half of the country but came in surprisingly at number 20 on the list, which is much lower than most would expect.

While many people dream about moving to California, the state has seen a mass exodus over the years. In 2018, 691,000 people decided to pack up and leave the coast. The state is known to be expensive, have terrible traffic, and is too populated. While there is much to see and do in the Golden State, with so much time spent sitting on the road and having to work so much, it is tough to enjoy living there. The high cost of living also means many residents can't enjoy a house and a yard, which isn't ideal for families raising kids. Despite the ocean, the mountains, the desert, and many tourist attractions, living in California is not as nice as visiting. Taking a vacation to the west coast for a week or two is enjoyable, but in terms of living in California, you are better off in 19 other states according to this list.
