Thanksgiving has passed, and you might be regretting some of your eating choices. Perhaps you had too many slices of pie, you got too many scoops of mashed potatoes, or you went back for seconds or thirds and regretted it afterwards. The holidays can be tough to navigate when it comes to staying healthy and being on a diet. Most know that when the year ends, they will make New Year's resolutions to hit the gym and lose weight, and let things go during the holidays, but you don't have to. You can stay good on your diet while still enjoying the holidays, with a few dieting tips to not overdo it this season.

The holidays can be a time when many put on some extra weight. From Halloween candy to Thanksgiving, to holiday cookies, candy, and a Christmas meal, plus any adult beverages that are consumed, it can take a toll on your body for the final months of the year. Some decide to enjoy the festivities and the food and not care about weight and diet, while others do their best not to let their hard work go to waste during the holiday season. There are ways to do both, but you have to be smart about it, and it takes discipline.

For those looking not to gain too much weight during this time of year, Ezzday.com has released a few tips on what to do.

  1. Front-load your day with protein and fiber. By doing this, it satisfies those cravings that may lead you to want more pie, cookies, or other sweets throughout the day.
  2. Watch your portion size. Many of us want to get as much food as we can on our plates during the holidays, but smaller portion sizes will limit our intake and help us not put on as much weight.
  3. Slow down when you eat. Eating too fast can cause you to bloat, and during the holidays, many of us are excited to eat after smelling the food all day, when it is best to slow down and enjoy your meal instead.
  4. Balance the adult beverages. Many people need alcohol to survive their families during the holidays, and others like to enjoy a drink when sitting around with their extended family or friends. It is ok to have a glass or drink, but offset it with water to help with bloating.
  5. Take a walk during the holidays. Taking a walk after a heavy meal is a great idea, instead of letting it sit like a brick in your stomach. It will help you digest faster, lessen bloating, and could help relieve some stress, too.
  6. If you go overboard, follow up with a post-holiday diet. A liquid diet or something to help push the food through the system, the day or two after the holiday, is not a bad idea. It will help speed up the process and help you get back to normal sooner.
