One of the best parts of living in Idaho is the great outdoors. Getting outside and enjoying the natural beauty of the Gem State is a luxury that no Idahoan should take for granted. Unfortunately, in the winter, the weather drops drastically, and many of us hunker down and don't get to enjoy the outdoors as much as we would like. Because of these long winters, it can often make staying active tough, but when the weather allows it, most of us enjoy being outside and being active in some form or fashion. When it comes to living in the best places to live an active style, how does Idaho compare to other places in the country?

Getting outside and enjoying an active lifestyle is not only good for physical health but also mental health as well. Certain cities come to mind when you think of an active lifestyle, and most of them are in warm coastal states. WalletHub recently released a list ranking the top 100 cities that live an active lifestyle, and did so using categories like budget and participation, and sports and outdoors. It was determined that Honolulu is the best city to live an active lifestyle, with San Francisco coming in at second and New York City rounding out the top three. The worst city on the list is North Las Vegas, with Garland, Texas, and Fort Wayne, Indiana not far behind to make up the bottom three.

One Idaho city made the list, and not surprisingly it was Boise. When it comes to living an active lifestyle in the capital, WalletHub ranked them 39. Boise is 48 in budget and participation and 34 in sports and outdoors. It is surprising to not see Boise higher in sports and outdoors when you consider how many people ski, snowboard, hike, play hockey outdoors, and kayak in the summers. It makes you wonder how Twin Falls would compare to Boise, seeing how more residents seem to enjoy than outdoors in the Magic Valley than those that live in the city.

While the winter weather may slow us down from being active, this list proves that Idahoans are doing much better than other states. While some places have the benefit of year round weather that allows them to be outdoors, Idaho doesn't, but we still find ways to remain active. Continue to enjoy an active lifestyle in Idaho, because not every place is blessed with such great activity as we are here in the Gem State.
