Here’s What the 3 New Idaho License Plates Will Look Like
Earlier this year, Idaho held a contest to design new themed nature license plates. The plates would feature an elk, a bluebird, and a trout.
The contest was a redesign of the current options with those animals and the winning submissions have been chosen and the reactions are mixed. What do you think about the new ones vs the old options?
Idaho Reactions Mixed on New License Plate Design Options
The Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation posted pictures of the new plates on social media and the comments prove that you can’t please everyone. Some comments claim the new plates look almost identical to the old ones. Other people claim the option they submitted was better than the one that won. And a few people like the new choices.
We think the new plates look great - especially the elk plate. The old one always bothered us that they didn’t use a more classically beautiful elk with symmetrical antlers. Sure, antlers come in all shapes and sizes but the new plate depicts what we expect when we think of an elk.
The trout plate is definitely an upgrade too. If we were to bag on any of the new options it would be the bluebird. It isn’t bad, but we aren’t sure that it’s an upgrade from the old option.

The winners of the design contest won $1,000 and the plates benefit the Idaho Department of Fish & Game’s Diversity program (non-game), the Idaho Department of Fish & Game’s Wildlife Health Lab, the Idaho Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Disease Lab, and the Idaho Department of Parks & Recreation’s Boating Access Program.
Stephen Clark of CDA designed the bluebird and trout and Courtney Cunningham, CSO at the Twin Falls Police Department, designed the much-improved elk plate.
