Bacteria In South Idaho Dairy Milk Linked To Sickness Outbreak
Several consumers of milk produced at a southern Idaho dairy are reportedly recovering from illnesses after bacteria was discovered in unpasteurized products. It has been determined that the tainted raw milk came from a dairy north of Pocatello.
Idaho health officials are working alongside Paradise Grove Dairy after nearly 20 people reported sickness from consuming unpasteurized milk, according to details shared by KTVB. Others who consumed the product may not yet be aware of the potential for sickness. Paradise Grove Dairy is located 100 miles north of Pocatello.
Consumers should discard the milk immediately to avoid exposure to others. The dairy is working to resolve the issue and prevent further illnesses.
Bacteria can form in milk in several ways. It can develop within the animal, from being stored at improper temperatures, allowing too much air to get to the product, improper handling, and the equipment used in the process. The pathogens from the bacteria are what get into the body and result in sickness.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), foodborne illness accounts for more than 40 million cases annually in the United States. Symptoms of foodborne illness include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and fever, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
