Spending time trail hiking or running in nature is something many people cherish as a way to get some exercise and take in the scenery. Encountering wild animals is part of the experience, but one California woman got the surprise of a lifetime when she turned a corner on a trail and has the footage to prove it.
Personally, hitting record on my phone would be the last thing I would think about doing if I jogged up on a large bear escorting her babies on an afternoon stroll.
Hiking is something I really enjoy doing, but running I try to avoid at all cost. Only when being chased will someone see me move at a brisk pace. Another thing I don't do is hike alone.
Footage of a California woman jogging went viral a few months back when she ran up on a mother brown bear and her cubs. In the video, you can see her encounter the bear, and begin to slowly and calmly back away, which is what most people would do in this situation. Fatal bear attacks in the United States don't happen very often at all. On average, there is less than one per year, according to bearvault.com. It's still considered dangerous to jog or hike in wooded areas alone. The encounter happened on a trail in Sierra Madre, a community roughly 17 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
