PALOMINO VALLEY, Nev. (AP) — The top Democrat on a congressional subcommittee on public lands says he wants to work with well-meaning U.S. land managers to overcome decades of mismanagement of wild horses and fix outdated roundup policies he says prioritize livestock over mustangs. Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva  said after touring a government corral with more than 1,000 horses north of Reno Wednesday he finds it disturbing there’s now more captured horses and burros in holding pens than the estimated 40,000 on the range in 10 Western states. Grijalva says he’s anxious to hear the Bureau of Land Management’s response to a recent report from the National Academy of Sciences that suggests roundups have the unintended consequence of actually increasing wild horse populations. He says horses deserve a bigger share of rangeland allotments.
