Greek Yogurt to Expand to More State’s School Lunches

Benito Baeza

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Based on the success of a three-month pilot program in New York and three other states, officials say the U.S. Department of Agriculture has decided to expand a program adding Greek yogurt to school lunches.

Sen. Charles Schumer on Thursday said participating schools in New York, Tennessee, Idaho and Arizona consumed 200,000 pounds of Chobani Greek yogurt during the three-month pilot program last fall. Chobani is made in New York and Idaho, which leads the U.S. in Greek yogurt production.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Rep. Richard Hanna announced Thursday that USDA has decided to expand the Greek yogurt school lunch program to four additional states during the next school year. The states haven’t been chosen yet. A bidding process will determine which company will supply the Greek yogurt in the selected states.
