While summer brings the blockbusters to the movie theaters, there’s also plenty of great stuff to look forward to taking home to view on your small screen this may, from action and romance to comedy and horror, and everything in between. Read on for our guide to the best new movies hitting DVD and Blu-ray in May 2014. 

May 6

Veronica Mars‘ – Starring Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, and Enrico Colantoni. Years after walking away from her past as a teenage private eye, Veronica Mars gets pulled back to her hometown — just in time for her high school reunion — in order to help her old flame Logan Echolls, who’s embroiled in a murder mystery.

‘Still Mine’ – Starring James Cromwell, Ronan Rees, and Genevieve Bujold. An elderly couple fight against local authorities in rural New Brunswick to build their final home.

‘The Art of the Steal’ – Starring Kurt Russell, Jay Baruchel, and Katheryn Winnick. Crunch Calhoun, a semi-reformed art thief, agrees to get his old gang back together to pull off one last heist.

May 13

That Awkward Moment‘ – Starring Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan, and Miles Teller. Three best friends find themselves where we’ve all been – at that confusing moment in every dating relationship when you have to decide “So…where is this going?”

Her‘ – Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, and Amy Adams. A lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with his newly purchased operating system that’s designed to meet his every need.

I, Frankenstein‘ – Starring Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy, and Miranda Otto. Frankenstein’s creature finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans.

‘Stalingrad’ – Starring Mariya Smolnikova, Yanina Studilina, and Pyotr Fyodorov. A band of Russian soldiers fight to hold a strategic building in their devastated city against a ruthless German army, and in the process become deeply connected to two Russian women who have been living there.

May 20

The Monuments Men‘ – Starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Bill Murray. An unlikely World War II platoon is tasked to rescue art masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their owners.

About Last Night‘ – Starring Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, and Regina Hall. Follow two couples as they journey from the bar to the bedroom and are eventually put to the test in the real world.

3 Days to Kill‘ – Starring Kevin Costner, Hailee Steinfeld, and Connie Nielsen. A dying CIA agent trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter is offered an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment.

Pompeii‘ – Starring Kit Harington, Emily Browning, and Kiefer Sutherland. A slave-turned-gladiator finds himself in a race against time to save his true love, who has been betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts, he must fight to save his beloved as Pompeii crumbles around him.

Vampire Academy‘ – Starring Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, and Danila Kozlovsky. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, half human/vampire, guardians of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discretely within our world. Her legacy is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi. This is her story.

‘In Secret’ – Starring Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Felton, and Jessica Lange. Set in the lower echelons of 1860s Paris, Therese Raquin, a sexually repressed beautiful young woman, is trapped into a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin, Camille, by her domineering aunt, Madame Raquin. Therese spends her days confined behind the counter of a small shop and her evenings watching Madame play dominoes with an eclectic group. After she meets her husband’s alluring friend, Laurent, she embarks on an illicit affair that leads to tragic consequences.

‘Grand Piano’ – Starring Elijah Wood, John Cusack, and Kerry Bishe. Moments before his comeback performance, a concert pianist who suffers from stage fright discovers a note written on his music sheet.

‘The Right Kind of Wrong’ – Starring Ryan Kwanten, Sara Canning, and Ryan McPartlin. Leo the dishwasher falls in love with a bride on the day of her wedding — to another man.

‘McCanick’ – Starring David Morse, Mike Vogel, and Cory Monteith. Set over the course of one day, a narcotics detective hunts for a seemingly harmless young criminal who knows a truth about the cop’s past.

‘A Birder’s Guide to Everything’ – Starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ben Kingsley, and James Le Gros. David Portnoy, a 15-year-old birding fanatic, thinks that he’s made the discovery of a lifetime. So, on the eve of his father’s remarriage, he escapes on an epic road trip with his best friends to solidify their place in birding history.

May 27

Endless Love‘ – Starring Gabriella Wilde, Alex Pettyfer, and Bruce Greenwood. The story of a privileged girl and a charismatic boy whose instant desire sparks a love affair made only more reckless by parents trying to keep them apart.

‘Run and Jump’ – Starring Will Forte, Maxine Peake, and Edward MacLiam. An American doctor travels to Ireland to study the Casey family after 38-year-old Conor suffers a stroke which changes his personality, leaving dynamo wife and mother Vanetia to run the show.

’24 Exposures’ – Starring Adam Wingard, Simon Barrett, and Helen Rogers. In this sexy thriller a photographer who specializes in erotic photo shoots is suspected of murder when one of his models is found dead.

‘Gambit’ – Starring Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz, and Alan Rickman. An art curator decides to seek revenge on his abusive boss by conning him into buying a fake Monet, but his plan requires the help of an eccentric and unpredictable Texas rodeo queen.
