CALDWELL (AP) — Prosecutors say they intend to seek the death penalty against an Emmett man accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death at their Nampa home.

The Idaho Press-Tribune reports that Canyon County prosecutors have filed notice of their intent to seek the death penalty against Brandon Shaw in the death of Chelsey Rae Malone, citing aggravating circumstances.

According to court documents, Malone was stabbed several times outside her home while trying to run from Shaw. Shaw was interviewed by a Nampa police detective and told the officer that he tried to fire a rifle at her but the weapon did not discharge. As Malone fled, he chased after her and stabbed her with two kitchen knives.

County public defenders are representing Shaw. He is set to appear in court Friday.
