Senate Committee Passes “Ultrasound Bill”

More than 200 people packed a Senate committee hearing on a bill to require Idaho women to get an ultrasound screening before terminating a pregnancy.  Boise Sen. Chuck Winder’s*  legislation aims to decrease abortions in Idaho, and he argues women with more information about their fetus may opt against terminating their pregnancy.     The measure passed on a 7 to 2 vote.  Similar efforts have cropped up elsewhere in the country, most notably in Virginia, where the bill was passed despite incurring strong backlash from opponents. In Idaho, nearly 250 people protested against the bill on the state Capitol steps last week, slamming it as an assault on women’s  rights. Wednesday’s crowd included opponents of the measure, as well as advocates. Winder pushed successful legislation last year to ban abortions once a fetus has reached 20 weeks.
