‘The Purge 2′ is Coming (But That’s No Shocker)

The Purge

This weekend ‘The Purge‘ made $34 million at the box office. As the film had a production budget of $3 million, that means the film started to turn a profit less than a day after it was released. So it’s no surprise that they’re moving forward with a sequel.

Variety announced that producer Jason Blum and Universal Pictures are signed on to make the follow up. And though no writer, director or stars are currently attached, the film already has a $2.25 million dollar tax credit to shoot in California. Those tax credits were awarded last week, so the idea of a sequel has been in the air for quite some time. But the film’s shocking success means that ‘The Purge 2′ is going to be a high-priority for everyone involved.

Horror movies big and small have long been fodder for cash-in sequels, going back to the Universal Monster movie days (‘The Ghost of Frankenstein’ anyone?) and continuing on with both the ‘Saw’ and ‘Paranormal Activity‘ franchises.  The problem may be that — though those opening weekend numbers are impressive — audiences didn’t fall in love with the movie. ‘The Purge’ has a C rating on Cinemascore, and most horror movies have a steep box office decline on their second weekends, so it’s likely the film was an opening weekend wonder. But as the film is already hugely profitable, it’s unlikely anything will stop ‘The Purge 2′ from hitting theaters sometime in 2014.
