The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is suing Jerome Cheese Company for allegedly violating the Clean Water Act. In a civil complaint, filed in Boise's U.S. District Court last week, The EPA contends that the Davisco Foods International-owned Jerome Cheese Company in southern Idaho dumped waste water containing pollutants into an irrigation system that eventually flows into the Snake River. The EPA says those pollutants included phosphorus and ammonia over the amounts allowed by the company's permit, and that the violations occurred between 2006 and 2010. The EPA says the penalty for violating the Clean Water Act includes fines up to $37,500 per day in some cases.  Jerome Cheese Company has not yet filed its response to the lawsuit in federal court.
