See the Cast of ‘Say Anything’ Then and Now
When one thinks of ‘Say Anything...,’ John Cusak, holding a boom box above his head and serenading Ione Skye with the Peter Gabriel song ’In Your Eyes' likely comes to mind.
But beyond that iconic scene, Cameron Crowe’s directorial debut is perhaps one of the most well-crafted and nuanced teen romantic comedies of all time.A large part of the success of the film was due to its strong cast, which included some solid character actors in addition to Cusack and Skye. See what the actors of ’Say Anything…’ are up to these days below.
John Cusack, Lloyd Dobler
Then: To this day Cusack is still remembered for playing kickboxing slacker Lloyd Dobler, who has romantic designs on beautiful high school valedictorian Diane Court. Cusack, 22-years-old at the time, was already fairly well known, having starred in movies such as ‘Better off Dead’ and ‘Eight Men Out.’
Now: Cusack has enjoyed a long and steady Hollywood career. His last movie was ‘The Paperboy,’ and the outspoken liberal recently announced plans to develop and star in a film based on the life of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh.
Ione Skye, Diane Court
Then: Skye was 18 when she played the smart and stunning Diane Court. The daughter of folk singer Donovan Leitch had previously starred alongside Keanu Reeves, Crispin Glover and Dennis Hopper in the bleak teen drama ‘River’s Edge.’
Now: The 42-year-old’s Hollywood career has been spotty, after a big start during the '80s, but she still pops up now and then. (You might remember as Ann's mom on 'Arrested Development.) Her biggest role in years will be as one of the stars of the upcoming silent film ‘Return To Babylon.’ These days, Skye is perhaps best known for her relationships with prominent musicians: she had dated Red Hot Chili Peppers front man Anthony Kiedis, was married to Beastie Boy Adam Horowitz and is currently married to Australian rocker Ben Lee.
John Mahoney, Jim Court
Then: Mahoney played Jim Court, Diane’s strict, though morally challenged father. Mahoney didn't become a full-time actor until the age of 37, and ‘Say Anything …’ was one of his earlier film roles.
Now: While Mahoney is well known for ‘Say Anything …,’ he is even better known for playing family patriarch Martin Crane for 12 seasons on ‘Frasier.’ Since then, he has guest-starred on ’Burn Notice’ and ’Hot In Cleveland.’
Lili Taylor, Corey
Then: Taylor made quite an impression as Corey, Lloyd’s songwriting BFF who has both an unrequited crush on him and an obsession with her ex-boyfriend Joe. ("Joe lies...when he cries!") Movie audiences had met Taylor the year before in ‘Mystic Pizza.’
Now: Taylor, 45, had a critically acclaimed run on HBO’s ‘Six Feet Under.’ She will be in three movies next year, including a supporting role in the Mila Kunis/Marion Cotillard thriller ‘Blood Ties.’
Jeremy Piven, Mark
Then: On the strength of being John Cusack’s good friend in real life, Piven played one of Lloyd’s buddies in ‘Say Anything...’ At that point, his career was pretty dependent on his buddy, having also played a small role in the Cusack-led ‘One Crazy Summer.’
Now: Piven improved his hairline and got famous for his role as super-agent Ari Gold on ‘Entourage.’ He is currently filming the TV mini-series ‘Mr. Selfridge’ in which he will play the title character, a flamboyant department store magnate.
Eric Stoltz, Vahlere
Then: Eric Stoltz pops up in 'Say Anything' as Vahlere, who throws a huge party for the graduating seniors. An ‘80s movie staple, Stoltz had previously starred in 'Fast Times at Ridgemont Hight,' ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’ and ‘Mask,’ and he was famously replaced in the Marty McFly role in ‘Back to the Future.’
Now: Stoltz starred as Daniel Graystone on the science fiction series ‘Caprica.’ Since its cancellation in 2010, he has appeared on episodes of ‘Leverage’ and ‘Wilfred.’ He's also a turned to directing in recent years, helming episodes of everything from 'Law & Order' to 'Glee.'
Pamela Adlon, Rebecca
Then: As Pamela Segall, Adlon played Lloyd’s no-nonsense friend Rebecca in ‘Say Anything.’ Previously she had recurring roles on sitcoms like ‘The Facts of Life’ and ‘The Redd Foxx Show.’
Now: An extremely successful voice actress, Adlon is most famous for her work as Bobby Hill and others on the long running animated sitcom ‘King of The Hill.’ The 46-year-old is a regular on 'Louie' and has played the foul-mouthed Marcy Runkle for six seasons on ‘Californication.'
Loren Dean, Joe
Then: You might remember Loren Dean as Joe, bad ex-boyfriend and object of Corey’s obsession. The next year the 19-year-old went on to star opposite Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman as the title character in ‘Billy Bathgate.’
Now: Recently, Dean has had recurring roles on ‘Terriers’ and ‘Bones.’ His last credit is the 2011 TV movie ‘Who is Simon Miller?’
Joan Cusack, Constance
Then: By the time real-life sister Joan played John Cusack's onscreen sister in 'Say Anything...,' the actress was already known from her sassy pal work in 'Sixteen Candles,' 'Broadcast News' and 'Working Girl.'
Now: Since then, Joan has won two American Comedy Awards and been nominated for an Oscar. She also voiced Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl in the 'Toy Story' franchise, and most recently appeared in 'Perks of Being a Wallflower.'
Jason Gould, Mike
Then: Before 'Say Anything...' Gould had one previous movie under his belt -- an uncredited appearance in 'Up the Sandbox' at the age of five in 1972. The movie starred his mother, Barbra Streisand. (Elliot Gould is his father.)
Now: Gould's last major film appearance was in another of his mother's movies -- 'The Prince of Tides' in 1991. He sometimes performs in theater and has made a few short films. Recently, he joined his mother onstage for her 'Return to Brooklyn' concert.
