George Jefferson is moving on up to a deluxe apartment in the sky.
Sherman Hemsley, the actor who portrayed the combative, but lovable George Jefferson on the sitcom ‘The Jeffersons,’ has died.
Hemsley, who passed away at his home in El Paso, Texas, was 74. It’s unclear how he died, although it appears to be from natural causes.
Hemsley originated the George Jefferson character on ‘All in the Family,’ before he earned a spinoff with ‘The Jeffersons.’ The CBS comedy premiered in 1975 and ran for 11 seasons. Hemsley earned an Emmy nomination for his work in 1984.
Hemsley returned to the small screen in 1986 for a five-season run as a deacon on the NBC sitcom ‘Amen.’
He also made guest appearances on a slew of shows, including ‘Family Matters,’ ‘The Fresh Price of Bel-Air’ and ‘Sister Sister.’
Hemsley was not married and did not have any children.
