1926 — Molla Mallory defeated Elizabeth Ryan to win her record eighth US national tennis championship at Forest Hills in New York. (More info.)

1931 — Lefty Grove of the Philadelphia A’s had his American League record-tying 16-game winning streak snapped due to an error by outfielder Jim Moore, as the St. Louis Browns beat Philadelphia, 1-0, at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis. (More info.)

1936 — Pitcher Bob Feller, 17, made his first major-league start for the Cleveland Indians and struck out 15 St. Louis Browns in a 4-1 victory at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland. (More info.)

1942 — Walter Johnson, 54, pitched to Babe Ruth, 47, in between games of a New York Yankees-Washington Senators doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. The two retired stars helped raise thousands of dollars for Army-Navy relief efforts. (More info.)

1953 — Boston Braves pitcher Phil Paine became the first former major leaguer to play in Japan. (More info.)

1982 — Pitcher Gaylord Perry of the Seattle Mariners was ejected for throwing a doctored baseball during a game against the Boston Red Sox at Seattle’s Kingdome. (More info.)

1988 — Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson sustained a hairline fracture of his right hand when he and former opponent Mitch Green brawled in the street outside a clothing store in Harlem. (More info.)
