The state Department of Labor wants to fine employers who don't comply with a law requiring them to report new hires within 20 days. Most employers don't comply with the state law passed in 1997, making it harder for officials to track things like overpaid unemployment benefits and deadbeat parents who owe child support. There is currently no penalty for those who fail to report new hires, and the labor department wants to changes that. The agency plans to ask lawmakers to impose a $25 fine on employers for every new hire that is not reported within 20 days, with a maximum of $5,000 in penalties allowed per quarter. The proposal is expected to go before an Idaho Senate committee Thursday. If approved, the penalty would take effect July 1.
