Although events will be centered along the Wasatch Front, a recent decision by Utah lawmakers tied to the 2034 Winter Olympics could have ripple effects across the entire state, including southern Utah.

The Utah State Legislature approved legislation this session eliminating state and local sales taxes on tickets for the 2034 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games. Supporters say the move helps Utah meet hosting requirements set by the International Olympic Committee and keeps ticket prices lower for spectators.

Under the bill, Olympic and Paralympic ticket sales will be exempt from Utah’s sales and use tax. Lawmakers estimate the exemption could mean roughly $80 to $90 million in tax revenue will not be collected statewide during the Games.

While most Olympic competitions will take place along the Wasatch Front, state leaders say the economic impact will extend well beyond the Salt Lake City area. Communities in southern Utah, including St. George and Hurricane, could see increased tourism as visitors travel throughout the state before or after attending Olympic events.

Southern Utah is already a popular destination for travelers visiting the state’s national parks and recreation areas. With the Olympics expected to bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to Utah, tourism leaders believe many will add stops in the region while exploring the state.

Lawmakers who supported the tax exemption argue the long-term benefits of hosting the Olympics, including tourism spending, international exposure, and economic development, will outweigh the tax revenue that would have been collected on ticket sales.

Utah was officially awarded the 2034 Winter Games in 2024, marking the second time the state will host the Olympics after the successful 2002 Winter Olympics.
