Mosquitoes might be the worst thing that arrives in the summertime. You can argue about whether the heat, wasps, or out-of-town visitors are worse.
But it’s a fact that mosquitoes are the deadliest and super annoying. Luckily, there is something that most people can do in their yards to keep the mosquito population down, and it’s really easy.
How Do You Know What Baby Mosquitoes Look Like
But first, how do you know if you have baby mosquitoes growing around your property? Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water and it only takes a few days for them to hatch, mature, and fly off to suck your blood.
Mosquitoes in Idaho can carry the deadly West Nile Virus, so it’s extremely important to kill them before they can bite you. The easiest time to do that is when they are babies, swimming around in water. This is what they look like.

That video was from my backyard after we went on vacation for a week and a half. We came back to a pool full of mosquito babies. Granted, when we left, the pool was already green and ripe for growing gross things.

If you do find mosquito babies in your yard, tip over the water. That’s the easiest way to kill them. If they are in a big water container, you can treat it with chemicals or drain the water.
Fun fact: if you get a mosquito bite, it was a female. Male skeeters don’t bite humans or animals. Mosquitoes also live a lot longer than you probably think. Females can live up to 56 days and males make it to 10 days on average...unless you dump out their water when they are babies.
